More Village shops stocking Fairtrade

March 11th, 2012 by Mark Rusling

Mark and Ahsan campaigning for Fairtrade

Yesterday Ahsan and Mark visited shops on Orford Road with Fairtrade Waltham Forest. Waltham Forest is a Fairtrade borough. We were encouraging the shops to stock Fairtrade products – tea and coffee for the cafes, chocolate for the newsagents. Many shops already do stock Fairtrade products, and we would like more to do so.

We’ll be working with Fairtrade Waltham Forest in the future. We’re very supportive of their aims, and want to show residents and businesses that Fairtrade products aren’t more expensive than non-Fairtrade – they’re just better!

Village Square re-planted with Community Council funding

WVRA Gardening Day - 5 February 2011

On Saturday, 25 volunteers re-planted the Village Square on the corner of Orford and Eden Roads. Using funding from the Community Council, it took less than 30 minutes for the square to be transformed. This is another great example of the work that the Walthamstow Village Residents Association do for our area – click here if you want to get involved with their work.

E17 Business Improvement District

June 30th, 2010 by Mark Rusling

Plans are currently underway to create a Business Improvement District in Walthamstow, centred on the High Street, and covering sections of Hoe Street and St James Street. The area covered does not at present include any of Hoe Street ward.

We believe that the BID could be a great way of encouraging a flourishing commercial and retail sector in Walthamstow. However, there must be strong links between the BID area and commercial areas in Hoe Street ward, particularly the businesses in Orford Road.

We will monitor the development of the BID plans, to make sure that the voice of business in the ward is heard, and that Hoe Street businesses can benefit from any BID in E17. Get in touch for more details.

Streets still messy on First, Second, Third….

February 15th, 2010 by Mark Rusling

It was First, Second and Third Avenues and Orford Road for us on Saturday, where we managed to speak to a lot of new residents. Street cleaning is still your major concern – litter blows up these streets from Hoe Street. If you are concerned about the dirty state of our streets, write to the Liberal Democrat Cabinet member in charge, Cllr Bob Belam – cllr.bob.belam@walthamforest.gov.uk.

Labour has agreed an extra £500,000 for street cleaning – do let us know how we should spend this.
