Help out at Vestry House!

April 18th, 2011 by Mark Rusling

Many of you may not know (I didn’t until a few weeks ago) that much of the borough’s archives are found in our ward. Vestry House Museum also houses the archives from the old boroughs of Leyton, Walthamstow and Chingford.

I visited the archives recently, and they really are a fantastic resource. Unfortunately, many are not properly stored, and there is a vast amount of work to be done in cataloguing the photos and documents.

Would you like to help out? The staff at Vestry House are always looking for volunteers. You don’t need any previous experience, but you would need to undergo a CRB check. If you are interested in helping out, contact us and we will put you in touch with the appropriate people.

9 October is Apple Day!

September 23rd, 2010 by Mark Rusling

On Saturday 9th October, from 11am-4pm, the ever-popular Apple Day returns to the Vestry House Museum Gardens in Walthamstow Village. Organised by the East London Organic Gardeners, the event for all the family celebrates locally home-grown apples.

There is juice pressing; apples and organic produce for sale; apple-bobbing; competitions for the longest peel; talks on everything you didn’t know about apples; apple trees for sale; and cakes, teas, jam and chutneys to buy.

Last year around 1000 people enjoyed the day and the organisers need volunteers this year, as well as people to come along and enjoy themselves! If you can help out, please email Teresa Deacon on teresadeacon@btinternet.com.
