New cycle stands for the Village

May 21st, 2012 by Mark Rusling

We have arranged for six new cycle stands to be placed in Walthamstow Village, with the approval of the Village Residents Association. We are committed to making it easier for people to cycle in the ward and borough, so do let us know if there are other things we could do.

Waste and recycling bins in Village

January 11th, 2012 by Mark Rusling

Mixed-use waste and recycling bins are being placed in the Village, allowing residents to recycle more of their rubbish. This issue was raised at our Community Ward Forum, and we’re pleased to have been able to sort it, making our borough cleaner and greener!

Village earns national Silver Award

September 30th, 2011 by Mark Rusling

Last week, Walthamstow Village represented London in the national Britain in Bloom awards. The Village was awarded a Silver medal in the national urban community category, following up their Gold Award in the London in Bloom finals.

The Village was commended for the community’s response to the disturbances in August, in particular the volunteering at the Welcome Centre. Congratulations again to everyone involved.

The judges’ reports and the Village’s awards will be on display at the Walthamstow Village Residents Association AGM, taking place at the Asian Centre, Orford Road, at 8pm in 17 October. All are welcome.

The Village – best in London again!

September 18th, 2011 by Mark Rusling

Congratulations yet again to the Walthamstow in Bloom Committee. On Friday night, Walthamstow Village was awarded London in Bloom’s Best Urban Community – for the third year in a row! However, the Village has gone one better than last year and been awarded a Gold Award.

This is a fantastic achievement for all concerned – very many congratulations from us. We were delighted to attend the launch event in August, so we know that this is richly deserved. Walthamstow received full marks for community participation with judges noting “a genuine sense of community and friendliness”.

The awards will be displayed in the Vestry House Museum, and the finals of Britain in Bloom are being held on 24 September. Best of luck for them!

London In Bloom Judging Day - 5 July 2011

Yesterday, the London in Bloom judging team were in Walthamstow Village. The photo above shows them with Stella Creasy MP, Hoe Street Councillor Ahsan Khan and Waltham Forest Mayor Councillor Geoff Walker.

After a presentation, the Village Residents Association took the judges on a two hour tour of the Village. The team find out in September how they have done.

The national judges are visiting Vestry House Museum on 12 August at 9am. We’ll be there to support the team. Good luck to all involved!

Village Square replanted

May 8th, 2011 by Mark Rusling

Replanted Village Square - 7 May 2011

The Walthamstow Village Square has been replanted with funds from the council and help from the Walthamstow Village Residents Association. The former Community Council voted to give the Residents Association £2862.50 to improve and replant the square. The work was carried out at the weekend.

A gardening club has pruned back the overgrown shrubs and added two tonnes of topsoil. The new plants are perennials, so will brighten up the square all year round. The Residents Association will be dedicating a rosebush to the memory of Janice Tildsley, whio sadly passed away at the end of 2010. Janice was a dedicated supporter of the Residents Association and the square will be a fitting memorial to her.

As ever, the Residents Association do a great job, and we’d like to thank them for all their work to make the ward a better place to live.

Help out at Vestry House!

April 18th, 2011 by Mark Rusling

Many of you may not know (I didn’t until a few weeks ago) that much of the borough’s archives are found in our ward. Vestry House Museum also houses the archives from the old boroughs of Leyton, Walthamstow and Chingford.

I visited the archives recently, and they really are a fantastic resource. Unfortunately, many are not properly stored, and there is a vast amount of work to be done in cataloguing the photos and documents.

Would you like to help out? The staff at Vestry House are always looking for volunteers. You don’t need any previous experience, but you would need to undergo a CRB check. If you are interested in helping out, contact us and we will put you in touch with the appropriate people.

Two awards for Hoe Street businesses

April 7th, 2011 by Mark Rusling

Two of our well-known businesses have been presented with coveted awards. The Rose and Crown pub on Hoe Street has just been named CAMRA’s East London Pub of the Year, after two years of making the shortlist.

The Spar in Walthamstow Village has also been named as the best convenience store in the country at the 2011 Convenience Retail Awards. The judges described the Spar as “a convenience store with a difference” and “completely deserving of this major national accolade”.

Congratulations to both businesses, which offer excellent service to the people of Walthamstow, producing a mean pizza and a superb pint!

Get involved in spring cleaning the ward!

February 10th, 2011 by Mark Rusling

The council is organising the Waltham Forest Spring Clean from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 March. A number of small clean-ups will be taking place across the borough, organised by residents’ associations, schools and councillors. Local communities will get together to pick litter, paint, prune and remove graffiti and fly-tipping. All the litter will be recycled. We want to work with you to make Hoe Street cleaner, in time for Spring.

On Friday 25 March, school children will be involved in clean-ups throughout Waltham Forest. Many groups in Hoe Street ward have already decided to get involved – including the Walthamstow Village Residents Association, Milton Road Residents Association and the Friends of Wingfield Park.

If you would like to organise your street to join the clean-up, let us know. Council officers can provide you with the equipment, and we’d be happy to join you to help out.

Get in touch, and together we will make Hoe Street a better place to live in!

Village Square re-planted with Community Council funding

February 7th, 2011 by Mark Rusling

WVRA Gardening Day - 5 February 2011

On Saturday, 25 volunteers re-planted the Village Square on the corner of Orford and Eden Roads. Using funding from the Community Council, it took less than 30 minutes for the square to be transformed. This is another great example of the work that the Walthamstow Village Residents Association do for our area – click here if you want to get involved with their work.
